THE MUSIC PROGRAM

MUSIC FOCUS GRADES 8 – 12

At Hudson School of Music, our approach to each musical instrument family is unilateral. We focus on all classes, Brass/Woodwind, Strings, Percussion and Piano with a relative 5 year concentration in the following areas:

Music Performance

This department strives for performance excellence from the minute we meet the student. We offer a program that encompasses the playing of all musical instruments, emphasizing sound awareness, confidence, and innate talent. We encourage all musicians to participate in competitions, to build up their resume. Students will perform on the renowned stages of NYC (such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall) in a range of ensemble programs.

Music Theory

Our comprehensive study of the fundamental elements that construct and govern the language of music, including notes, scales, chords, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. Music theory serves as a set of rules and guidelines that musicians use to create, analyze, and interpret music.

Ear Training

One of the most valuable things students can do as musicians is improve their aural skills with ear training. Spending time regularly developing a musical ear will fast track skills as a musician and give a whole new appreciation when listening to music as well. Young musicians learn various aural skills to detect and identify pitches, intervals, melody, chords, rhythms, solfeges, and other basic elements of music, solely by hearing.

Sight Reading

Students develop the ability to read and perform instrumental and vocal music at first sight, which involves converting musical information from sight to sound. This practice requires the musician to play or sing the notated rhythms and pitches, eventually allowing the student to perform a piece in a music notation that they have not seen or learned before.

Ensemble Training

This area of study focuses primarily on the interaction and relationships amongst a group of musicians. We prepare our students in both hands-on and live settings, performing all genres of musical theater. Based on the interest of the student, this course of study can include, but is not limited to, classical, jazz, and modern, providing a full spectrum of the performance experience.
